Okay, this has nothing whatever to do with either Phyllis Diller (although she did have a cat) or wine (unless I had been drinking it, and I haven’t — although come to think of it, that’s not a bad idea).
I have wondered for quite some time now, why my cat looks toward the ceiling and actually seems to be tracking something. Black Jack just jumped up on his perch by my computer — a pillow in a box on the bookcase — and suddenly looked up, watching intently for 30-40 seconds before snuggling down and closing his eyes. And it’s not just Black Jack. my previous cat, Minx, used to do the same thing. Minx would jump up on the bed, begin bathing and then suddenly look up as though something had caught her attention and stare unblinking for a minute or so before going back to her bath.
The other cats don’t do this, but I have to wonder — what is Black Jack looking at? I know the Bible says there are angels all around, and cats are certainly phenomenal animals (oh, hush, you dog people!), so is it possible?
I actually put this question to a pastor once at a dinner party. He looked at me strangely as I told him how my cat would watch intently, not just stare at one spot, but actually watch as if she were seeing something that was invisible to me. “It’s probably a bug,” he said shortly as he returned to his chicken Kiev. I wanted to tell him I most assuredly do not have bugs traversing my ceiling, but perhaps he didn’t believe in angels. Or cats.
And now that I think on this a little more, I realize that both Minx and Black Jack are black cats. The others who don’t seem to notice whatever it may be (angel or bug?) are your basic tabby-type cats. Well, there’s Paddy O’Cat a sort of exotic Rag Doll, but his attention is mostly divided between food and watching for a chance to get outdoors and roll on the concrete.
Perhaps black cats do have some kind of extra sensory perception that makes them aware of things we cannot see. Perhaps that’s why they were so hated and feared in the Middle Ages.
In any case, the question remains — are cats attuned to the paranormal? Can they see things that we can’t? And if they do, why don’t they tell us? Oh, wait, maybe because they don’t speak English. At least in front of us.
