Who doesn’t like wine? Okay, I can name a few people who don’t, but my thinking is, “All the more for me!”
I discovered wine and wineries a couple of decades ago when I’d gone to a conference in Yosemite and on the way back, stopped in the little town of Murphys, California, and discovered – for the first time – wine tasting rooms. Whee!
It didn’t take me long to decide this was something I really enjoyed and wanted to explore. I got some wine maps of California and on my next vacation headed for Amador and El Dorado counties in the Sierra Foothills the other side of Lake Tahoe. There I discovered Zinfandel! Oh, my, even after two decades, Zinfandel is still my favorite wine. (And in case you are not all that familiar with wine, Zinfandel is a rich red wine – not pink and sweet.)
Of course there are so many wines to learn about and love. I decided Petite Sirah is my second favorite, followed by Syrah and, of course, blends. Can’t go wrong with a red blend.
I took several wine courses at the college and university here and finally dropped my prejudice against white wines. Still far from my favorite, but they have their place – especially in summer. There are some lovely Viogniers and Chenin Blancs that are perfect for sipping on the patio of a summer evening.
From buying wine at the supermarket, I graduated to buying wine from the wineries (not much of a savings in money, though) and now have two wine cabinets full of wine. I need someone to help me drink it because, unfortunately, once I introduced my friends to the joys of touring wine country (Paso Robles, here we come!) and visiting the vineyards, they all started collecting wine, too. So whenever there is a party we fight over who gets to bring the wine. It’s actually a fun thing to fight about!
I hope you’ll read about my fun with wine and add your own comments and opinions! Cheers!
